2021 -- The Edlu

2021 - May 8th
Larchmont Yacht Club's 66th Annual Edlu Distance Race

It's a short distance race.  Usually 32 miles.  The day was overcast and not too windy.  The Race Committee wisely (in my opinion) chose to send us on the short course, about 18 miles.

I was part of the crew of the good boat Eagle, a J-121.  Skipper Steve Levy, also Mike, Scott, Jack, Ben, Dave, Ryan, and me -- 8 in all.

The wind was light.  The weather was not warm. (it was in the 50's).  Our 22-mile course was upwind for 11 miles, then downwind for 11 miles.  The wind wobbled between 6 - 10 knots, direction between 60 and 120 (magnetic).  Playing the shifts was one key to success (as well as avoiding gross errors).

We had a quick team meeting before the start.

I was busy trying to figure out the wind during the first half.  Didn't take any additional pics until we were going downhill.

Steve, driving.

Here's Mike, trimming the kite.

Jack, Scott, Dave and Ryan searching for more wind.

6.4 knots of BSP in 7.8 knots of breeze -- fairly efficient.

The results:

We finished third.  The conditions didn't suit our boat too well -- and we think Windward Leeward scoring should have been applied rather than All-Purpose.  Oh well.

It was my first race of the season, so I was happy to ease into it a bit with light conditions.

Next week:  Indian Harbor's Geartester!
